Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I log my hours?

For the 2019-2020 Fall semester, hours should be logged using THIS form.

Where do I log my summer hours?

For the 2019-2020 Summer, hours should be logged using THIS form.

Do my extra hours from first carry over to second semester?

No. Your hours are refreshed each semester so we can ensure we have volunteers for each event.

Where and when can I tutor?

TUTORING BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL:

  • Takes place in Mr. Ray's room (room 186).  In the morning, the room is open for tutoring starting at 8:00AM and will end at 9:05AM.  In the afternoon, tutoring starts at 4:15PM and ends at 5:15PM.  Please note, if you arrive after 4:20 and no officer and/or Mr. Ray/Ms. Abdalla are present, then tutoring is off for the day (as in you missed your chance; we aren't waiting around all day for you to show up-unless prior arrangements were scheduled ahead of time).  Remember to sign in/clock in with Mr. Ray or one of the officers present only when you and your tutee have arrived, and don't forget to sign out/clock out as well.

TUTORING DURING SCHOOL:

  • Takes place in the Math Lab (Room 101) or the Library. You and your tutee can arrange for a tutoring session during school/during Study Blocks. Make sure you get the teacher covering the Math Lab or a librarian in the Library to sign your hours sheet to show you really did tutor someone BUT that won't count as the official sign off--you MUST get either of the advisors (Mr. Ray or Ms. Abdalla) to sign off on your hours sheet. For more information on tutoring, click HERE.

How do I get my group service point?

To earn your group service point, you must attend your committee's event and have the advisors sign off at the END of your event. However, some committee events have extra requirements that need to be met in order for you to get your group service point, so make sure you attend each committee meeting and understand your commitment. If you are unable to attend your committee's event, email the advisors, your admin leader, and your committee leader.

*You only need to do ONE committee event per school year, NOT per semester.*

What type of hours do I need? How many of each?

As a member you need a total of 20 hours per semester:

  • 5 tutoring hours OR 5 math lab visits*

    • You can do both tutoring and math lab (EX: 3 tutoring hours AND 2 math lab visits), or you can just do one option (EX: 5 tutoring hours and no math lab visits, OR 5 math lab visits and no tutoring hours)

  • 5 in-club service hours (events sent out by secretaries or listed as in-club on the NHS website)

  • 10 mixed hours (tutoring, math lab, in-club service, or out-of-club service)

*Remember, math lab requirements are by visits, so although you must go for the entire block (1 hour and 30 minutes), it will only count as 1 visit.

How do I know which out-of-club service hours are acceptable?

For your out-of-club service hours to count, you must get the advisors to approve them unless they are at Broad run. At Broad run, you do not need prior approval. Great out-of-club service opportunities can be found HERE but again, email the advisors (and CC your admin leader) in advance so you know if your out-of-club opportunity is acceptable.

How do I accept a tutor request?

Follow the instructions HERE

What do I do if I know I'll miss a meeting? What is the attendance policy?

If you are unable to attend a meeting, let the advisors, your admin leader, AND the NHS Secretaries (brhsnhssecretaries@gmail.com) know at least 24 hours in advance.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: 2 unexcused absences will result in a formal letter reprimanding the member, and automatic submission to the faculty council, who will review the member's position within the organization. (Keep in mind, students have been removed from NHS for this reason!) 2 unexcused tardies is equivalent to 1 unexcused absence.

  • Missing or being late to the makeup meeting counts the same as missing a general meeting (again you are expected to be at these if you miss a general meeting).

To see a full list of general meeting dates for the 2018-2019 school year, visit the home page HERE & all dates are on the right side.
