About Tutoring

What?

You are required to complete anywhere between 8 to 12 tutoring hours. If you will be completing less than 12 hours of tutoring, you will need to complete mixed hours from an out-of-club organization in order to obtain the hour requirement of 12 hours total. Hours will be due January 17th, 2021.

Tutoring Hours Check-In

-Please have at least FIVE hours of tutoring completed by December 7, 2020

When & Where?

Tutoring before (8:00-9:05) and after (4:05-5:15) school takes place everyday in Mr. Ray's room (186). However, during the school day/study hall blocks, tutoring will take place in Math Lab OR in the Library.

Math Lab:

-Room 101

-Monday-Friday every week

-NO ONE can enter the first ten minutes and the last ten minutes of the block

-Only TWO members can tutor each block

-Sign up using the Sign Up Genius before you show up

-Have the teach monitoring the room sign off on your hours sheet

-DO NOT wait until the last few weeks of the semester because spots will fill up

Library:

-If you want to tutor your tutee during study hall, you have to tutor at the library (instead of in the math lab due to limited amount of space)

-Tutor at the tables in the back of the library near the electronic classroom

-You and your tutee must get a pass from the librarians in the morning (or in between classes)

-You are allowed to reserve a pass for your tutee, but your tutee must pick up their own pass

-Make sure you whisper/talk quietly

-Have the librarian sign off on your hours sheet

-Please be patient with the librarians and follow their rules!

Tutoring room hours of operation

-Early Dismissals

How?

To accept a tutor request:

  1. Right-click the "Subject" box in the Google Sheet and insert a comment and type "Accept" with your email.      EX: Accept, johndoe@gmail.com

  2. Contact your tutee with the email they have provided in the Google Sheet. Cc the NHS VPs at brhsnhsvps@gmail.com, the tutee's teacher, and the advisors at mahlet.abdalla@lcps.org and collin.ray@lcps.org. In your first email to the tutee, you should introduce yourself and say that you are an NHS member that can tutor him/her in the subject he/she requested. Set up a meeting and specify the location, time, and date, and ask them to confirm this! Please email your tutee within 24 hours of accepting their request on the Google Sheet or the VPs will erase your comment accepting their request. A gold highlighted row in the Google Sheet means it's verified.

what to do in the tutoring room

  • When you get to the tutoring room...

    • Wait for your tutee to arrive, and when they show up, go to the computer in the back of the room and sign in

      • Type your name in the first/white column, then click the box in the maroon "Time in" column and then in the maroon "Clock in" button on the right

      • THE OFFICER IN THE ROOM CAN HELP YOU IF YOU ARE CONFUSED

    • Teach your tutee!

    • Finish up your session

      • Ask you tutee if they would like to schedule another time to meet

      • Get your sheet signed by Mr. Ray or Ms. Abdalla, OR initialled by an officer if you cannot find the advisors (However, you still need all tutoring hours signed off by an advisor)

      • Go back to the computer to sign out (Click the gold "Time Out" column, next to where you clocked in, and then click the gold "Clock Out" button on the right side)

tips To Being A Great Tutor!

  • Tutor in subjects that you are comfortable in

  • Be patient

  • Let your tutee explain what they need help with specifically, show/teach them what they are struggling with, and then allow them to practice the skill on their own

  • Be friendly so that they will come back to you for more tutoring!

Things To Keep In Mind

  • Officer initials on your hour sheet are not final-you must find the advisors to sign off before turning in your hours

    • If you’re in the computer lab during school, you may get an adult’s signature that is in that room

    • If you're in the library during school, you may get a librarian's signature

  • For specific tutor requests on the google doc, the VPs will email you, but don't accept the tutoring request if you aren't the requested tutor

  • Always check the availability of a tutee before accepting their tutor request

  • If a student does not respond to your email within 24 hours, resend it. If 48 hours go by without a response, email their teacher, and ask if they will speak to the student about meeting with you to be tutored

  • If your tutee cancels last-minute or doesn’t show up, send them a follow up email regarding the cancellation and Cc their teacher and the VPs, so we are aware of your efforts to tutor

  • After you have met for the first session, you no longer need to Cc the NHS VPs, the teacher, or the advisors for consequent sessions, and you can text your tutee if you would like

  • Please do not delete someone else’s comment accepting a tutee

  • Only accept one or two tutees at a time

  • Please do not tutor friends or siblings simply to get your hours

  • You can always tutor more if you would like to earn mixed hours as well (NOT IN-CLUB HOURS)

  • Try to avoid using your Chromebook in the tutoring room

  • Start early!
